A contemporary fusion of Iranian folk music, jazz, orchestral music, and world music, combining Persian modal traditions with modern jazz harmony, orchestral arrangements, and diverse rhythmic structures. The album explores the dialogue between Iranian melodic identity and contemporary global musical language.
Artistic Context & Process:
Hasht Par is Babak Khangholi’s debut full-length studio album, comprising six original compositions. The album is built around melodic diversity while remaining deeply rooted in Iranian folk traditions. Original lyrics for Rooleh and Anar were written by Babak Khangholi, while the remaining works draw inspiration from regional folk traditions, Arabic poetry in Persian translation, and the poetry of the classical Persian mystic Baba Taher.
The project was conceived as a large-scale collaborative production, bringing together some of the leading musicians and arrangers from Iran’s independent music scene. Through its integration of jazz harmony, orchestral writing, Iranian modal intervals, and rhythmic experimentation, the album presents a distinctive contemporary interpretation of Persian folk music.
All compositions and the initial musical concepts were created by Babak Khangholi, whose artistic direction established the album’s unified musical identity, while each arranger contributed a unique perspective that enriched the overall sonic landscape.
